Gewöhnt vs. Gewohnt – Their Use in German

The Difference:

‘Gewöhnt’ comes from the verb, ‘gewöhnen’, which means to grow accustom to something.

‘Gewohnt’ is the past participle of the verb, ‘gewöhnen’. This means that you have already grown accustomed to something.

Sich Gewöhnen An (+Accusative)

The verb ‘sich gewöhnen an’ is used when someone adapts or gets accustomed to something. Do not worry about the ‘ge-‘ beginning, the verb is still in present tense! The verb phrase always requires the accusative case.

Examples:

  • Ich gewöhne mich an das Autofahren in der Nacht.

Ich gewöhne mich daran, nachts Auto zu fahren

-I am growing accustomed to driving at night.

-I am getting used to it. (driving at night)

  • Wir haben uns schließlich an das schlechte Wetter gewöhnt.

-We have finally gotten used to the bad weather.

  • Du gewöhnst dich erst noch daran.

-You are still getting used to it.

            Conjugations:

  • Present: ich gewöhne mich, du gewöhnst dich, er gewöhnt sich, wir gewöhnen uns, ihr gewöhnt euch, Sie or sie gewöhnen sich
  • Perterit: ich gewöhnte mich, du gewöhntest dich, er gewöhnte sich, wir gewöhnten uns, ihr gewöhntet euch, Sie or sie gewöhnten sich
  • Perfect: ich habe mich an… gewöhnt

Gewohnt Sein (+Accusative)

Gewohnt sein’ is either in the accusative case or placed in a subordinate (dependent) clause with ‘zu’ + infinitive. Unlike the verb phrase ‘sich gewöhnen an’, ‘gewohnt sein’ does not require a preposition.

Examples:

  • Ich bin es gewohnt, nachts Auto zu fahren.

-I am accustomed to driving at night.

  • Wir sind das schlechte Wetter gewohnt.

-We are used to the bad weather.

  • Du wirst das bald gewohnt sein.

-You will get used to it soon.

  • Er war das frühe Aufstehen gewohnt. Aber jetzt ist er es nicht mehr gewohnt, er muss sich neu daran gewöhnen.

-He was used to waking up early. But now he is not used to it anymore. He has to get used to it again.

Conjugations:

  • Present: ich bin…gewohnt, du bist…gewohnt, er ist…gewohnt, wir sind….gewohnt, ihr seid…gewohnt, Sie or sie sind…gewohnt
  • Preterit: ich war…gewohnt, du warst…gewohnt, er war…gewohnt, wir waren …gewohnt, ihr wart…gewohnt, Sie or sie waren…gewohnt
  • Perfect: ich bin …gewohnt gewesen, du bist…gewohnt gewesen, er ist…gewohnt gewesen, wir sind…gewohnt gewesen, ihr seid…gewohnt gewesen, Sie or sie sind…gewohnt gewesen
  • The Perfect in this case is a tad complicated. The preterit may be a better option!
